Description

BOOK DESCRIPTION
This is a study of the churches of Nobadia - the most northerly of the three medieval Nubian kingdoms. Since more than two-thirds of its territory has now been flooded by the successive Aswan dams, and much of the remainder has been surveyed by archaeologists, there is probably not a great deal remaining to be learned. The time therefore seems appropriate for a summary overview. Volume I begins with an introduction to the study as a whole, followed by descriptions of 67 churches of the Early Christian period, built between about AD 550 and 850, and 47 Classic Christian churches, built between about SD 850-1100. The second volume deals with Late and Terminal Christian churches (c. AD 1100-1500), as well as a comparative overview of the various features ofNobadian church architecture. These chapters are followed by a brief survey of the churches of Makouria and Alwa, and a final discussion of the dynamics of development and change.
