Description

Since the 5th dynasty, the birth of a calf and its suckling has been depicted in wall reliefs of ancient Egyptian tombs, grave goods and amulets. In this book, evidence for this custom will be compiled and catalogued for the first time. The present contribution analyses rock carvings, based on the shepherd picture Min 1-12 and other sources on the birth of a calf and its suckling in Ancient Egypt. This analysis shows the link between the idea of the birth of the sun as a calf and the behaviour of the shepherds during the birth of a calf. Through this, we can understand how the king’s role as sun priest, ensuring the passage of the sun, has pastoral roots.

AUTHOR

Hartwig Hartmann is an Egyptologist specializing in ethnology and the Old Testament. He co-authored the catalog for the exhibition "Ägyptens Aufstieg zur Weltmacht” and gained his own archaeological experience during his two-week survey in the Upper Egyptian town of Elkab, where he was first introduced to its rock inscriptions and rock art.

REVIEW
‘Egyptian rock art is a rare topic in general and each contribution to this field of research is a worthy addition. This book offers an extended catalogue of archaeological material that serves as a source of comparanda for the analysed rock art scene.’ Dr Paweł Lech Polkowski, Poznań Archaeological Museum
