Description

In Bengali, abhijñan denotes ‘a token of recognition’. Embedded also within the term is the notion of abhijña or ‘memory’ and abhijña, or the ‘expert’, the ‘wise’, and the ‘experienced’. This collection of 18 specially commissioned research papers on South Asian archaeology and art history of artefacts, contributed by 22 scholars from Bangladesh, India, Pakistan, Nepal, Sri Lanka, Italy and Germany, is presented as a token of recognition in memory of an expert, wise and experienced archaeologist from Bangladesh, Abul Kalam Mohammad Zakariah. The contributions reflect and celebrate his tireless work in rediscovering and documenting the rich archaeological heritage of South Asia. They include pottery studies, preliminary reports from excavations, analyses of settlement patterns, craft and art objects, metalware and much else besides, from sites across South Asia, from Nepal to Sri Lanka, and from the Neolithic to the modern period.
