The Archaeology and Epigraphy of Hellenistic and Roman Megaris, Greece

This study of Megaris, focusing on the Hellenistic and Roman periods, provides a regional perspective based on archaeological, historical and epigraphical evidence. It offers surveys of the geography and geology of the region, a site catalogue and discussion of settlement development, a historical survey from the earliest times to late antiquity, and an epigraphical corpus, divided into Hellenistic and Roman sections, of ca. 320 total inscriptions, about half of which are tombstones. The corpus also includes decrees of proxenia, lists of epheboi, dedications, Imperial statue bases, donatives, and victor lists. Comparanda are drawn from the inscriptions of Megaris’ colonies and from those of other Greek states to bolster this relatively small corpus and to better reconstruct the situation in Megaris. The author draws on the evidence of the catalogue, corpus and comparanda to discuss political structures, religious institutions, international relations, the population and some leading families.
