Description

This book focuses on the spatial and social relations between people performing their daily activities on various kinds of Stone Age sites, on the micro-level. Functional aspects in the archaeological site material both in terms of the lithic assemblages and site structural features raised an opportunity to discuss features of prehistoric division of labour. The present analysis is therefore an attempt to elaborate on these ‘functional’ aspects of the archaeological material in an analysis of prehistoric activities and social interaction. To do so, the author develops a perspective appropriate to the analysis and interpretation of material remains from spatially organised behaviour on prehistoric sites. The primary objective is to study activities in terms of their character and spatial organisation as reflected by lithic waste and structural remains, to determine how work activities have been organised spatially, and whether this organisation can be evaluated in terms of individual and gender behaviour.
