Description

This study aims to establish the relations between the shapes of red-figured and black-glazed vases produced during the 4th century B.C. in Athens. Moreover, it examines the tensions of the main vase shapes, produced by both manners of decoration. Another target is to show whether the productions of red-figured and black-glazed vases are parallel, simultaneous and made by the same workshops or whether they follow different tendencies, and to determine the significance of these similarities and differences. The material under study consists of a sample of vases preserved integrally, either in museum collections or burial groups and settlements. The CVA’s 117 volumes from 1923-2002 provide many examples, but often with no archaeological context. Moreover, the chronology of their red-figured vases is essentially stylistic, and thus vague. This study attempts to give a more accurate chronology to several vases, based on typological comparisons.
