Description

The Second International Conference on Aviation Archaeology and Heritage (ICAAH), held online in November 2024, successfully continued from the inaugural conference in Malta in 2017, drawing wide international participation. This volume captures its proceedings, reflecting the discipline’s current state and diverse approaches. A key theme of the conference explored the need for a centralized hub to share knowledge and best practices in aeronautical archaeology. Papers delve into the emergence of regional underwater aviation archaeology and cover a range of topics from advanced excavation techniques for complex submerged aircraft wreck sites to analyzing historic photographs to understand terrestrial aircraft wrecking events. Contributions touch on the human and emotional dimensions of crash sites, dedicated efforts to locate missing military personnel, and unique regional heritage initiatives. The collection blends theoretical insights with practical fieldwork, emphasizing cultural heritage management and aiming to encourage the global conversation in this specialized field.
