Description

The present study aims to establish a clear ethnoarchaeological perspective on the pastoralists of Gujarat in the Harappan period, to re-examine the archaeological material from different regions and sites for reinterpretation, and to conduct fresh explorations and excavations to create a more useful archaeological database to reconstruct this pastoral lifestyle. In the Mature Harappan context, pastoralism needs to be treated from a holistic civilizational perspective. In essence, this study is an attempt to confirm and bring together some of the important conclusions which have been touched upon only in general terms by earlier scholars. It uses contemporary historical and archaeological approaches alongside several ethnological accounts of the nineteenth and early twentieth century to enrich our information base and to raise up the ethno-archaeological understanding of pastoralism.
