Description
This volume presents the excavations and finds of the first two seasons’ work by the British Institute of Afghan Studies in 1974 and 1975 at Shahr-i Kohna, Kandahar. Kandahar is a key site for the Indo-Iranian borderlands region. It has all major periods represented from the Iron Age in the 1st millennium BC to the Islamic conquest, and is a city of major military and strategic significance, of more than purely local importance. In particular, material was recovered relating to cultures hitherto poorly documented archaeologically, such as the Sakas, Indo-Parthians and Hephthalites. The results of the excavations, therefore, have important implications for the spread of cultures between southeastern Iran, Central Asia, and the northwestern Indian Subcontinent. This book includes excavation reports on the main architectural features and burial sites explored in the course of the excavation, together with specialist reports on the small finds, coins, and ceramics, including Achaemenid pottery.
