This volume, presented as a tribute to Professor Dr Ashraf Alexandre Sadek, gathers papers on the theme of light in Ancient Egypt and in Coptic Christianity, uniting its honorand’s dual expertise in Egyptology and Coptology and interest in the symbolism of light. It presents a concise collective study on various aspects of light in the ancient Egyptian mind, be it in the sphere of pure metaphysics, of allegory and mythology – used by the Egyptians of Antiquity to provide a pre-scientific means of explaining celestial phenomena (especially the Sun, the Moon, the planets and the stars) – or in the sphere of the societal norms and personal lives of ancient Nile-dwellers. In all of these the significance of light was extremely important, considered as a divine property and expected to be the lot of the blessed ones after their death and their subsequent resurrection.
