En el año 1992 se realizó la excavación arqueológica del solar en el que estuvo ubicado el antiguo Convento de San Francisco de Asís de Las Palmas de Gran Canaria. La importancia de esta intervención radicó en que se trataba de un edificio fundado a finales del siglo XV, en fechas próximas a la conquista de la isla por la Corona de Castilla. Entre el abundante material exhumado, de procedencias y cronologías diversas, presentamos en este trabajo los resultados del estudio de “la serie blanca lisa”. Gracias a los trabajos precedentes y a hallazgos arqueológicos paralelos en tierras americanas, portuguesas y españolas, conocemos sus fechas de producción, desde la mitad del siglo XV hasta mediados del XVIII. La falta de datos en la memoria de excavación nos llevó a analizar la serie cerámica a partir de la observación macroscópica de la pasta, del tipo de cubierta y de los diseños aplicados en su superficie, para identificar, a través de su lectura, posibles indicadores cronológicos o de procedencia. Los análisis petrográficos de los recipientes cerámicos han permitido confirmar su procedencia andaluza. En este trabajo describimos el análisis sistemático que hemos desarrollado para caracterizar “la serie blanca lisa” e identificar su alfar de procedencia. Proponemos, además, una cronología a partir de la evolución tipológica de las diferentes morfologías de los recipientes de la vajilla que fueron exhumados del solar franciscano, a partir del análisis de los resultados obtenidos en excavaciones arqueológicas en Marruecos, en América y en la Península Ibérica (Portugal y España); por tanto aportamos una visión general unificando criterios de los estudios precedentes desde los tres continentes que rodean al Archipiélago Canario.

This study provides an analysis of one of the imported ceramic series, known as ‘the smooth white series’, recovered at the archaeological site of the former Convent of San Francisco de Asís, founded in the late 15th century, in Las Palmas de Gran Canaria.

Elena Sosa Suárez es Doctora por la Universidad de Las Palmas de Gran Canaria. Es profesora de Geografía e Historia en Educación Secundaria del Gobierno de Canarias. Elena Sosa Suárez has a PhD from the University of Las Palmas de Gran Canaria. She is a geography and history teacher in secondary education for the Canarian government.
