Description

This work offers a catalogue and discussion of jewellery found in burial contexts of Bronze Age in Greece. The first chapter, concerned with technology, shows the skill of the craftsmen of the period, and demonstrates that the value of a jewellery item depends not only on the material, but also on the labour expended in its making. It also includes discussion of materials, with emphasis on metals, accompanied by evidence of workshops and tools in Bronze Age contexts. The next chapter presents a typology, categorised into Head/Hair ornaments, Neck ornaments, Clothing ornaments and Arm/Hand ornaments, aiming to shed light on the everyday life and social structure of the period with evidence that only jewellery can provide. The time of first appearance, development, and any evidence of the way each type of jewellery was used are also discussed.
